Strawberry Sour Cream Jello Salad – Retro Potluck Recipe

Strawberry Sour Cream Jello Salad – Retro Potluck Recipe

Some dishes don’t just show up to dinner—they make an entrance. And in my family, that honor belongs to the Strawberry Sour Cream Jello Salad, proudly wobbling its way to the center of the table in a well-loved 9×13 glass baking dish. It’s bright. It’s layered. It’s unapologetically retro. And it absolutely refuses to be ignored.

You know the one. That glossy ruby-red top packed with strawberries, hiding a cool, creamy sour cream layer like a sweet little surprise. Then come the crushed pineapple, sliced bananas, and a generous handful of pecans for crunch. Every spoonful feels like a greatest hits album of Retro Jello Salad Recipes. Sweet, tangy, creamy, nutty—it’s all happening at once.

Growing up, this Retro Jello Salad made appearances at every holiday, potluck, and random Tuesday when someone felt nostalgic. Right next to it, you’d often spot a Cranberry Sour Cream Jello Salad or maybe a Cranberry Jello Salad With Sour Cream during Thanksgiving. Different fruit, same creamy magic. IMO, that sour cream layer is the real hero. It cuts through the sweetness and keeps things from going full sugar overload.

And don’t get me started on all the spinoffs. Ever tried figuring out How To Make Raspberry Jello Salad just to switch things up? Or served a Raspberry Jello Dessert when strawberries weren’t in season? The possibilities feel endless once you’ve nailed a solid Jello With Sour Cream Recipe.

That’s the beauty of a good Jello Salad With Sour Cream. It’s flexible. It’s forgiving. It’s a little kitschy and totally proud of it. So whether you’re team strawberry or loyal to cranberry, one thing’s for sure—this classic Strawberry Sour Cream Jello Salad isn’t just food. It’s a tradition with a wobble.

Ingredients

  • 6 ounces strawberry-flavored gelatin mix
  • 1 cup freshly boiled water
  • 20 ounces frozen sliced strawberries
  • 20 ounces canned crushed pineapple, thoroughly drained
  • 3 medium bananas, cut into rounds
  • ½ cup chopped pecans
  • 16 ounces sour cream

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, pour the strawberry gelatin powder and add the boiling water. Stir continuously until the crystals are fully dissolved and the mixture is clear.
  2. Next, fold in the well-drained crushed pineapple. Be sure not to substitute fresh pineapple, as it can prevent the gelatin from firming properly. Add the frozen sliced strawberries, banana slices, and chopped pecans. Gently mix everything together until evenly combined.
  3. Transfer half of the fruit and gelatin mixture into a 9×13-inch dish, spreading it out into an even layer. Place the dish in the refrigerator and allow it to firm up for about 20 to 30 minutes. Keep the remaining gelatin mixture at room temperature during this time; do not refrigerate it.
  4. Once the first layer has partially set and feels firm to the touch, spread the sour cream evenly over the top. Make sure the sour cream reaches all the way to the edges of the dish, creating a smooth and even middle layer.
  5. Carefully spoon the remaining gelatin mixture over the sour cream layer. Spread it gently so it fully covers the surface and reaches the corners of the dish, forming the final layer.
  6. Refrigerate the completed dish for at least 2 hours, or up to overnight, until fully set. For best results and cleaner slices, allow it to chill longer. When ready to serve, cut into squares and enjoy.
